Continued Interior Sanding, Thru-hull Fittings, and Boom Work (3-16-25)

Mar 16, 2025

Getting back to the shop today, I picked up where I had left off the day earlier...continuing to fair the aft portion of the cabin sole where the seacocks are located. I grabbed water and a scouring pad to remove the amine blush which forms over the surface of cured epoxy - a contaminate that must be removed prior to continued work. once the surface was clean and dry, I began sanding with the palm sander as well as by hand in the tight areas. As was the case yesterday, this sanding work comprised the bulk of my time today on Biscuit, but with this task complete, I was ready to move on to more exciting things!

I confirmed the hole saw that I would use to open up the hull for installation of the thru-hull fittings - in this case a 1" hole saw. I will be going back with the same size seacock - a 3/4" FBV-750, for 3/4" flanged ball valve bronze seacock. I then assembled the hole saw and mounted it to the drill, headed out to Biscuit and drilled out both port and starboard for the thru-hull fittings. I will be ordering these seacocks and thru-hull fittings this evening.

I secured Biscuit after removing all tools from her cabin, and set out to do some continued work on the boom - sanding and applying a second coat. I sanded the surface lightly with a 150-grit disk, being careful to not blow through the first coat and at the same time to attempt as fair a surface as possible. Once the sanding was completed, I mixed a small pot of the primer paint and set it aside for its 15-minute induction period. With the primer paint doing its chemical thing, I took the time to wipe down the sanding residue with surface cleaner (solvent-based). After setting up the painting tools required, I was ready to open the paint pot and give another good stir prior to application. With a foam brush, I applied the second coat of primer paint to the boom, working down one side of the boom and coming back on the other side. With that, I closed the shop and headed out. Rough cut and removal of the new brightwork is next on the to-do list, as well as installation of the new seacocks.
